Greg Osterhaus at GlaveKocen

On my way to watch VCU play some school from Ohion in the NCAA Tournament at Baja Bean Co., I happened to pass by the GlaveKocen Gallery at 1620 W. Main Street and a flash of bright color in the window caught my eye. I couldn't resist the opportunity to stop in and look at the oil paintings of Greg Osterhaus on display through March 31, 2015.

How to describe Osterhaus' work? Art critic Clement Greenberg famously said “Paint is paint; surface is surface.” This declaration was meant as a defense of abstract expressionism which focused on the qualities of paint and surface without reference to representation of a recognizable subject. What I saw in Osterhaus' work was representational art that nevertheless incorporates attention to the paint and surface--a kind of post-abstract expressionist impressionism--expressed in a color scheme that would be familiar to Pop Art painters: an interesting fusion. I found his work very arresting and well worth a look.

You can catch Greg Osterhaus' show at GlaveKocen through March 31, 2015.
