Photos from the 2013 Redskins Camp in Richmond, Virginia

Turnout has been heavy with crowds 5 and 6 deep at the rail to watch the first Redskins training camp in Richmond.

The weather has been perfect so far, sunny skies with temperatures in the mid-to-high 80s.

This photo from the terrace overlooking the endzone gives an idea of the scale of the crowd.

Like most late arrivals, my experience consisted of attempts to get a glimpse of RG III through the crowd.

RG III as seen over the shoulders of other fans.

The crowd was large and dense along the railings.  The atmosphere was like that of a street festival.

Only time will tell if the new training camp will be a success. Even while the first camp is under way, there are still parts of the new park that remain unfinished. While the crowds have been large, only time will tell how many of them came from outside the Richmond metro area and how much they were willing to spend in Richmond's restaurants and hotels. Another key metric will be how many other uses the city can make of the new facility during the 48 or 49 weeks of the year when the Redskins aren't in residence. Hopefully the city will be able to look back in a few years and see this project as a wise investment, but it will be years before we know for sure.

The Redskins will be here in Richmond at their training camp through August 16, 2013. There are two training sessions each day for most days and admission is free (though parking may not be). You can find more information at the Redskins' training camp website.
