Bond's decision not to run again reflects a number of factors. Bond is getter older, has held positions of real power in the U.S. Senate, and now it is becoming increasingly evident that it may be more than a dozen years before the Republican Party is competitive again. Men like Bond, who have tasted real power, are unwilling to wait around for more than a dozen years to get another chance at a chairmanship.
Bond's announcement means that there will be at least four open Republican Senate seats in 2010, giving Democrats an excellent chance at snaring at least one seat, putting them at sixty seats. For those of you just joining the game, sixty seats in the Senate would allow Democrats to impose cloture and prevent Republicans from filibustering needed reforms simply to prevent Democrats from suceeding in office.
