McCain blunders and CBS covers up

Yesterday, during an interview with Katie Couric, John McCain either told an enormous, obvious lie or he demonstrated that he doesn't understand the timeline of the surge in Iraq, and therefore doesn't understand the impact of the surge.

The central issue is the so-called "Sunni Awakening" in Anbar province. This was the decision by many Sunni sheiks to change sides and expel Al Quaeda in Iraq from Anbar. This movement began in September of 2006, long before anyone even thought of a surge. McCaintries to claim that the Sunni Awakening occurred because of the surge. The reality is that the surge was only one relatively small factor in the change in the course of the war in Iraq, but McCain has based his entire campaign on the surge.

I'll let Keith Olbermann pick up the story from here, since it was Olbermann that I first heard this story from.

Here's a comparison of the edited interview and the interview as it originally occurred.

Here's a question for the audience: was it ethical for CBS News to edit this interview to make John McCain look smarter or more honest?

And some people have the nerve to call bloggers biased. CBS needs to investigate how this happened and make certain it never happens again.
