The special election in Virginia's 1st Congressional District is a chance to widen the fight for the expansion of SCHIP.
Why? Because there are thousands of families in Virginia's 1st Congressional District that would qualify for SCHIP, especially if it were expanded to meet the needs that already exist. Because the Republican Party of Virginia opposes SCHIP and tried to block it's implementation when it was passed.
Virginia's 1st Congressional District is home to many families living below, at, or just above the poverty level. These people need SCHIP healthcare to raise healthy children. Let's look at a few examples, shall we?
In Richmond County, there are nearly a thousand families with children and about 10% of those families are below the poverty level. Many more are just above the poverty line, the working poor, and they need SCHIP.
In Middlesex County one child out of every five lives below the poverty level. Many more are just above the poverty line, children of the working poor, and they need SCHIP.
In Lancaster County, 18% of the children are below the poverty line. Many more live just above the poverty line, more children of the working poor, and like the Virginians I mentioned above, they need SCHIP.
Support Virginia's working families. Support the Democratic Party. Support SCHIP. Support Philip Forgit.
