Janet Oleszek to challenge Cuccinelli

Richmond, Virginia -- November 18, 2006

Ben Tribbett at Not Larry Sabato is reporting that Janet Oleszek has announced her decision to challenge Republican incumbent Ken Cuccinelli. Some of you may recall the Ms. Oleszek was an early and vocal supporter of Jim Webb. Back in May this is what she had to say about Webb:
Jim Webb has the natural leadership ability and the experience necessary to restore the wisdom and reputation of Congress. In our present situation, Virginia needs a principled Senator who will stand up for what he believes in. I am confident that Jim Webb would be that kind of Senator.
If she can draw on Webb's supporters to help her in her run, Ms. Oleszek might be a late addition to the "winners" lists being published on so many Virginia political websites in the wake of Webb's win.

This race is in Ben Tribbett's backyard, visit Not Larry Sabato to see what he has to say.

Can we stop the whole "she was an early supporter of Webb" thing? Didn't you just write something about Republican infighting on the blogs?

There's no need to keep dividing Democrats into the "pre-primary" factions. It's over. Webb won. Some supported him early, some didn't. That's how a primary works. Why are the winners having a harder time getting over it than the losers? You won! We won! Virginia won!

You badly misunderstand my intent here, and I suspect you may be projecting a bit here.

The fact that she was an early supporter of Webb will naturally incline folks who supported Webb to get out and work hard for her. And what is more, she is running in an area that came out very strong for Webb. It is always helpful to a politician to be able to follow in the steps of someone else, a sort of extended coattails effect.

I have no malevolent intent to exclude supporters of Harris Miller. There is a lot about Harris Miller that i respect, not least the way he worked to heal the split in the party after the primary.

Please don't accuse me of dividing Democrats, especially anonymously. I bear no ill will to anyone in the Democratic Party, and your inference that I do is insulting.

Janet Oleszek is in my backyard too. Ben and I both live in her district and both of us will attest to the fact that she's going to be a great candidate to challenge Cuccinelli, whom I like personally but thinks is far too conservative for the district he's representing.

This is going to be a fun race to work in. Janet's going to impress everybody with her candidacy.
