Fire at VCU's new business school

Richmond, Virginia -- November 28, 2006

The Monroe Park Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University was blanketed in acrid smoke this morning after the roof of VCU's new business school caught fire. The school is still under construction and it is unclear how much damage was done to the building and whether it will delay the completion of the new complex.

The small fire was extinguished quickly, helped no doubt by the fact that one of Richmond's many fire stations is less than a block from the construction site. The fire was apparently caused when hot metal from welding came in contact with flammable roofing materials.

I arrived too late to do more than take a few pictures of Richmond Firefighters wetting the area down thoroughly after having put out the blaze. Construction at the site resumed quickly and Main Street was reopened within the hour.

This is the first I have heard of this, and I should have known.

Good report.
